This performance was recorded live in Manchester England's Free Trade Hall, August,1956. Only three microphones were used - left, center and right - direct to an Ampex 300-3 three-channel 1/2" tape recorder.Most, if not all Mercury Classical titles were recorded in three-channel stereo. The half-inch 3-track stereo masters were edited and the three channels mixed "by means of a special electronic process developed by C. Robert Fine..." to make quarter-inch two-channel master tapes. From which Mercury' records and tapes were produced.
