John Laird Abercrombie December 16, 1944 August 22, 2017 was an American jazz guitarist. His work explored jazz fusion, free jazz, and avant-garde jazz. Abercrombie studied at Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. He was known for his understated style and his work with organ trios. John Abercrombie was born on December 16, 1944, in Port Chester, New York. Growing up in the 1950s in Greenwich, Connecticut he was attracted to the rock and roll of Chuck Berry, Elvis Presley, Fats Domino. John Abercrombie currently has a nice new quartet with bassist Marc Johnson , violionist Mark Feldman and drummer Joey Baron. No disrespect to Baron but I feel this quality ensemble would be even better if George Marsh were the percussionist, for he brings more into the mix than most drummers who just stick to the kit and don't explore the colors available especially in improvising ensemblesfrom other percussion instruments. There's an immense amount of space but also an intensity which is rare in any form of music. The music is deeply felt and deeply evocative.
