George Frideric Handel's Music for the Royal Fireworks 1749, composed at the behest of King George II of Great Britain for the great fireworks Music for the Royal Fireworks HWV 351 is a suite in D major for wind instruments composed by George Frideric Handel in 1749 under contract of George II of Great Britain for the fireworks in London's Green Park on 27 April 1749. The music celebrates the end of the War of the Austrian Succession and the signing of the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle Aachen in 1748. The work was very popular when first performed and following Handels death. Mozart called the work a spectacle of English pride and joy. Handel, George Frideric. OpusCatalogue NumberOp. Handel composed his Music for the Royal Fireworks while working for George II in 1749. The Treaty of Aix-La-Chapelle was signed to mark the ending of the War of the Austrian succession and the piece was composed to accompany the royal celebrations. A favourite among the royals, Handel, who had written the wonderful Coronation Anthems for George II and the Water Music for his father, George I, was commissioned to provide the music. The build up was huge top-class concerts open to the general public were virtually unheard of at the time and excitement was so great that tickets were sold for a p. I have been listening to Handel's Water Music and Royal Fireworks Music for years but I consider this particular recording of each to be the finest in existence. I had this originally on cassette tape as part of the Readers Digest series I think but it was this rendering by Sir Neville Marriner and the Saint Martin in the Fields Orchestra that just comes to life. I own this album in three formats. I love the bright brasses and the fine performances. I find it far more satisfying than the random artist fifty-for-a-dollar collections
