The name alludes to Mikrokosmos, a set of piano pieces by Béla Bartók, one of Crumb's favorite 20th-century composers. The first volume of the set was composed in 1972, while the last was completed in early 1979 the first performance of all four volumes in sequence was given by Yvar Mikhashoff, Aki Takahashi, Stephen Manes, Freida Manes, Jan Williams and Lynn Harbold, in Buffalo, New York, on 12 June 1980. George Crumb's Makrokosmos, Volume I, subtitled Twelve fantasy pieces after the Zodiac for Amplified Piano, is the beginning of a four-part series of piano works that composer returned to repeatedly throughout the 1970s. By the time this work was started, Crumb had already been in the international spotlight, winning awards for his compositions, including the Pulitzer Prize, the Guggenheim, and the Rockefeller. More importantly, Black Angels, for electronic string quartet 1970 captured the imaginations of avant-garde purists as well as a broader range of listeners. In 1971, George Crumb set out to compose a set of piano pieces the preludes of Debussy and Chopin as well as Well Tempered Klavier of J. Bach come to mind as prototypes. 1 & 2 for amplified piano, has proved a worthy heir to its 18th and 19th century analogs. Makrokosmos is a multi-dimensional odyssey through a universe of metaphysical timbres created via a compendium of extended piano techniques. These include the use of metal chains, paper on the strings, wire brush, paper clip, metal thimbles, whistlin. Listen free to George Crumb Makrokosmos I & Ii Fantasy-Pieces After The Zodiac. He is noted as an explorer of unusual timbres. Examples include spoken flute one speaks while blowing into the instrument and glass marbles poured onto an open piano. After initially being influenced by Anton Webern, Crumb became interested in exploring unusual timbres. With so many notes, this score would be difficult for any pianist to read if it was laid out simply on the page. Luckily, this piece by Crumb also contains three detailed pages of instructions, with movements including Primeval Sounds, Crucifixus and Spiral Galaxy. 21 images.
