Short intro
Georg Philipp Telemann 24 March 1681 25 June 1767 German pronunciation: was a German Baroque composer and multi-instrumentalist. Almost completely self-taught in music, he became a composer against his family's wishes. After studying in Magdeburg, Zellerfeld, and Hildesheim, Telemann entered the University of Leipzig to study law, but eventually settled on a career in music. He held important positions in Leipzig, Sorau, Eisenach, and Frankfurt before settling in. Telemann's music incorporates several national styles: French, Italian, and Polish. Throughout his life he composed a year's worth of cantatas for regular church services and 78 services for special occasions totaling 1,043 cantatas, 40 operas, 600-700 orchestral suites, 44 passions, along with numerous concerti, sonatas and chamber music for various instrumental combinations. More Less. One would think Telemann would have been burnt out over time in writing so many cantatas, but apparently not George Philipp Telemann: Drei sind, die da zeugen im Himmel contains four very different cantatas from differing historical points and locations within Telemann's long career - approximately 68 years - as a composer. Here Georg Philipp Telemann speaks directly to us and tells us with choice words in his own clever and easy-to-read writing style about the wondrous coincidental events in his life, particularly in regard to musical matters: I was born in Magdeburg on March 14, 1681 and was baptized on the following 17th in the Evangelical-Lutheran confession.
