Short intro

Gene Clark with the Gosdin Brothers is the debut solo album of Gene Clark, released in February 1967 on Columbia Records, catalogue CS 9418. It was his first effort after his departure from folk-rock group the Byrds in 1966. Though the album was a critical success and it established Clark as a talented singer-songwriter, it appeared very close to the scheduled release date for the Byrds' album Younger Than Yesterday in both the United States and the United Kingdom, hampering its possibilities for. Still, despite such solid songs and backing musicians, Gene Clark with the Gosdin Brothers failed to make much of an impact, perhaps due to its being released in the same week as the Byrds' Younger Than Yesterday, itself a tour de force that cemented their influence. However, in the realm of Clark's recorded output, this album stands as the one of the best, if not the best, example of how powerful a singer, writer, and bandleader he was. Album 1966 17 Songs. Gene Clark Sings For You. Two Sides To Every Story. The 2007 release however includes bonus tracks, one of which is the Dylanesque Only Colombe which I am quite fond of, this also features on Back to Mine Volume 16: Death In Vegas which is far superior to this album. You have the good arrangements by Leon Russel, excellent backing vocals by the Gosdin brothers, fabulous guitars by Clarence White and Glen Campbell, and, of course, one of the greatest voices of his generation, Gene Clark. What else could you ask for Tried So Hard is a superb country rock tune, the first of its kind. When Gene left the Byrds in 1965, he recorded this LP with the help of the Gosdin Bros and Michael Clarke & Chris Hillman. So what to expect Well, it's somewhere between his earlier work with the Byrds and later solo Lps but not quite more pop plus a little Dylan. From the liner notes: Early in 1967, CBS released the original version of this album under the title Gene Clark with the Gosdin Brothers. Perhaps it was ahead of its time. Gene Clark and his producer and friend Jim Dickson weren't happy with it either. When they learned that CBS planned to re-release the album feeling that perhaps now its time had come, they decided that all of the original eight-track recordings should be re-mixed and at least some vocals re-recorded. After a week in CBS L. studios, where it all began almost six years before, they emerged with an enormous
