Label founded in Montreal in 1976 by its director Paul Pedersen, then dean of the faculty of music of McGill University. Abe Kestenberg succeeded him in 1990. The first record, Concrete And Synthesizer Music, released in 1976, contained electroacoustic works by Bengt Hambraeus. In 1991, there were nearly 38 titles in the catalogue, covering such varied fields as jazz, chamber, symphonic, electroacoustic and contemporary music. EMS is a synthesizer company formed in 1969 by Peter Zinovieff, Tristram Cary and David Cockerell, based in Ladock. The founding partners had wide experience in both electronics and music. Cockerell, who was EMS' main equipment designer in its early years, was an electronics engineer and computer programmer. In the mid-1960s Zinovieff had formed the electronic music group Unit Delta Plus with Delia Derbyshire and Brian Hodgson of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop. This album recorded in 1967 by the Electronic Music Studio EMS of the University of Toronto exemplifies early experimentations in electronic music. It was the first studio of its kind in Canada founded by Dr Arnold Walter and the second in the North American Continent. The abstract songs are eerily captivating.
