Born in Vienna the son of a teacher, Gulda began learning to play the piano from Felix Pazofsky at the Wiener Volkskonservatorium, aged 7. Born in Vienna as the son of a teacher, Gulda began learning to play the piano from Felix Pazofsky at the age of 7 in 1942, he entered the Vienna Music Academy, where he studied piano and musical theory under Bruno Seidlhofer and Joseph Marx. After winning first prize at the International Competition in Geneva four years later, in 1946, he began going on concert tours throughout the world. This rarity from European pianist Friedrich Gulda has yet to be reissued on CD. Teamed in a trio with bassist Jimmie Rowser and drummer Albert Tootie Heath, Gulda explores five of his originals, including the side-long 20-minute Suite 1962. Although The Air From Other Planets is a little spacey, most of the music is quite swinging, with the episodic Suite 1962 being a definite highlight.
