Joe's Garage is a three-part rock opera recorded by American musician Frank Zappa in September and November 1979. Originally released as two separate studio albums on Zappa Records, the project was later remastered and reissued as a triple album box set, Joe's Garage, Acts I, II & III, in 1987. The story is told by a character identified as the Central Scrutinizer narrating the story of Joe, an average adolescent male, from Canoga Park, Los Angeles, who forms a garage rock band, has unsatisfying. In September of 79, Act 1 was released as a stand alone record and 2 months later the two final acts were unveiled as a double album, finishing the story. Later, a reissue set was released comprising of all three acts available on compact disc making it easier to purchase and comprehend. As mentioned, Joes Garage is a concept album, something Zappa is familiar with. After all, it is often said that his debut album Freak Out is one of, if not the first concept and double albums there was. This album follows a very coherent story. Joe's Garage is generally regarded as one of Zappa's finest post-'60s conceptual works, a sprawling, satirical rock opera about a totalitarian future in which music is outlawed to control the population. The narrative is long, winding, and occasionally loses focus it was improvised in a weekend, some of it around previously existing songs, but Zappa manages to make most of it hang together.
