Short intro

Frank Sinatra will forever be celebrated for his swaggering sense of style, mellifluous singing voice, and intimidating attitude. He was the worlds first modern pop star. But Sinatras most important cultural contribution might be what he is known for least: being a trailblazing recording artist. The concept album made it easier for the record-buying public to relate to the music that they purchased. Sinatra recorded fifty-nine studio albums and two live records during his forty-eight-year career. He called Frank Sinatra Sings for Only the Lonely, from 1958, his favorite. Bob Dylans new album, Shadows in the Night, which comes out today, has been called his Frank Sinatra record. The album does include ten songs all originally recorded by Sinatra, but its maybe more accurate to think of it as a conscious return to the compositions of the pre-rock era or, if you prefer, the pre-Dylan era, much in the way that Dylans two early-nineties records, Good As I Been to You and World Gone. Wrong, were callbacks to country blues. The ten songs on the record are drawn from the mid-century songbook, giving Dylan an opportunity to demonstrate his kinship with that.
