Close to Me is a song by English rock band the Cure, released in September 1985 as the second and final single from their sixth album, The Head on the Door. Three versions of Close to Me were released in 1985, including the original album version, the 7 single mix version and the 12 extended mix version. The album version does not feature the brass section part present on all of the other versions, which was adapted from a traditional New Orleans funeral march melody and played by horn section. Robert Smith from Q Magazine's 1001 Best Songs Ever: It's weird because of all the songs we've written, 'Close To Me' doesn't spring to mind as one of our best songs. It was a slightly surreal moment on the record and it wasn't even a definite album track during the recording. It was only when I did the vocal and got really extreme on the production, making it really claustrophobic sounding, that it came to life. Up till that point it was average. And it came back to me when I was writing The Head On the Door album. I was running myself into the ground a little bit and I started to suffer. I suddenly also started to get the same hallucinations, which was very odd. Close To Me was the second single from The Head On The Door. It was a top 30 hit in five countries overseas including The Cures homeland the UK. Robert Smith wrote it about an sense of impending doom he used to feel as a child that returned while recording The Head On The Door.
