Gabriel Fauré's Piano Quartet No. 2, in G minor, Op. 45, is one of the two chamber works he wrote for the conventional piano quartet combination of piano, violin, viola and cello. It was first performed in 1887, seven years after his first quartet. Fauré's previous work in the genre, the Piano Quartet No. 1, Op. 15, had been favourably received at its premiere in 1880, and was among the chamber works for which he had been awarded the Prix Chartier by the Académie des Beaux-Arts in 1885. This release brings together Faurés Piano Quartets including the much-loved C minor Quartet, surely Faurés best-known chamber work and the rarely performed or recorded Piano Quintets. Listeners who are most familiar with Faurés music through his Requiem and other Iowa-based Ames Quartet recording of Gabriel Faure's two Piano Quartets is technically polished but lacks emotional energy and passion. The two Faure quartets recorded here are bona fide masterpieces. The early 1st piano quartet 1879 is the better known of the two, memorable throughout but with a light scherzo that is justly a classic, but the 2nd piano quartet 1886 is also beautiful and often powerful, a gauzy slow movement track 7 with a depiction of far-away bells being a substantial centerpiece in the composition's four movements.
