Dropping some of the folky elements of 2009's Reservoir, London-based outfit Fanfarlo move in a more synth-oriented, '80s new wave direction with 2012's Rooms Filled with Light. The album was released in February 2009 on the band's own label Raffle Bat and later licensed to the Atlantic imprint Canvasback, who released it in the UK and US in October 2009 and in Europe in April 2010. Their single The Walls Are Coming Down was released during September 2009. The music video for the single was directed by Iain Forsyth and Jane Pollard and features escape artist Roslyn Walker performing the Hanging Straitjacket Escape, a stunt first performed by Harry Houdini in the early 1900s. Rooms Filled With Light was a phrase I found in an old notebook, says Fanfarlo's singer and songwriter Simon Balthazar of the title to the band's second album. To me it summed something up, creation, not creation of the world, but what we do as people. It seems like creating rooms and filling them with light is a very modern, fundamental human activity, creating little worlds. It resonates with the whole experience of making art or music. The follow-up to Fanfarlo's 2009 debut album, Reservoir, was recorded by Ben H Allen Deerhunter, Animal Collective d.
