Short intro

The Topography of the Lungs is an album by saxophonist Evan Parker, guitarist Derek Bailey and percussionist Han Bennink which was recorded in London on July 13, 1970 and became the first release on the Incus label. It is considered a milestone of the free improvisation genre. Incus Records was founded by journalist Michael Walters, who approached drummer Tony Oxley who brought in guitarist Derek Bailey and saxophonist Evan Parker who had played in the Spontaneous Music Ensemble to oversee the music. I am now convinced that Free Jazz is home to both some of the best and worst albums in the history of music. There is not one redeeming quality to The Topography of the Lungs. The complete lack of anything that would even resemble a melody and the seemingly random instrumentation makes it incredibly hard to listen to. I'm sure there are a few masochists out there that would derive some sort of pleasure out of The Topography of the Lungs, but unless you have a lot of drugs on hand and an art school education I'd recommend that you stay the hell away from it. Liner notes by Evan Parker for the 2014 re-issue: The Topography of the Lungs was the first recording I made as a leader - in the somewhat antiquated terminology of the times. What this means in simple terms is that I set up the date and invited Han and Derek to participate - after that it was a matter of open interaction. It was the first release on Incus, a label that I set up with Derek Bailey and Tony Oxley. UK Free jazz legends Parker and Bailey, plus obligatory dutch percussionist, recreate the sound of emptying refuse trucks at an illegal landfill site. This was the first release on Parker and Bailey's ground-breaking Incus Label, way back in 1970. It's an every man for himself improv-off,with clattering drums, scratchy guitar, and gargling saxophones, battling for the foreground. Parker re-released the album following Bailey's death in 2005 - dedicating the cd to his old sparring partner
