The Contemplative Part: Adagio. The Dramatic Part. Some, including three of the four works on this disc by the players of the Spectrum Concerts Berlin, have even gotten second recordings. The Second Violin Sonata from 1928 receives what appears to be its recorded debut in this violently expressionist reading by violinist Annette von Hehn that suits the music's aggressive modernity. Since 1997 Spectrum Concerts Berlin has made an important contribution to the growing recognition and appreciation of Ernst Tochs unique musical voice. This rare recording of Tochs solo and chamber music features the powerful and defiantly vivid Piano Quintet 1938, written in Hollywood following the composers escape to the USA, and the poignantly melancholy Violin Sonata No. 2 1928, a product of Tochs Berlin years when his music was regularly performed to appreciative audiences.
