Ernest Ansermet had a penchant for cool, intellectualized readings of classical repertoire, and that disposition is well suited to the music of Bach. The great Swiss conductor regularly performed the Orchestral Suites in concert with the SRO and as a guest conductor elsewhere I heard him with the BSO in an exquisitely crafted rendition of No. 2 sometime in the early '60's, and he evidently had a more than passing interest in Bach's sacred music as well. The excellent liner notes point to Ansermet's early career in mathematics as a springboard for his interest in this most. John Eliot Gardiners monumental Bach Cantatas Pilgrimage, which rolled its way across Europe in 2000, proved that contemporary listeners could connect with pieces originally conceived to enhance orthodox Lutheran sermons. Bachs cantatas lay claim to our attention as a testimony to supreme art, Christian faith and Western cultural history, and therefore demand that we come to terms with them, observes the German scholar Alfred Dürr. This involves not only a sensitive response to their cultural context but also conscientious grappling with the question of their relevance for our time. bach cantatas 208: Items in search results.
