Stigma is the second studio album by English alternative band EMF, released in 1992. It yielded two UK hit singles, Theyre Here no. 29 and Its You no. 23 respectively. The follow up to the commercially successful Schubert Dip, Stigma failed to make the UK top 10 Album Charts peaking at no. 19 and perhaps worse, was only in the charts for two weeks, its predecessor reached no. 3 and charted for 19 weeks. Although the surprisingly intense Unexplained EP gave EMF's fans some clue as to the direction the band was going to take with its next album, Stigma still took many by surprise. A claustrophobic record filled with heavy walls of guitars, effects, and dark keyboards, Stigma is about as far away as possible from the sunny dance-pop of Schubert Dip. While that album hid some darker lyrical concerns under its bubbly pop surface, Stigma is almost entirely concerned with feelings of alienation from fame, love, and friendship. EMF took the world by storm in 1991 with their debut album, Schubert Dip, which featured mega-hits Unbelievable, I Believe and Children. But it had nothing to do with the previous hits. In fact, Stigma had no chart hits, but it's a well-crafted 45-minute sonic nightmare, shaped into pop songs. The usual vocal samples, acidic synths, that down-and-dirty bass, the drums, the vocals are all overdriven -not noisy, just simply balancing on the edge. Clearly it was a new territory
