Loved Ones is a jazz duo album by Ellis Marsalis and Branford Marsalis. Originally conceived as Ellis's solo record of songs about unforgettable women, it became a duo project based on his realization that Branford would sound really good on some of the songs. The album reached Number 5 on the Billboard Top Jazz Albums chart. They say the apple doesnt fall far from the tree, and to prove it, along comes LOVED ONES, the duet album from renowned pianisteducator Ellis Marsalis and his son, saxophonist Branford Marsalis. Together with Delfeayo Marsalis serving as producer, the two have created and album of ineffable elegance and subtlety. Yet, says Ellis, As I played through these songs, I thought Branford would really sound good on some of them. Branford, to me, is the most creative and imaginative person playing music today. Ellis Marsalis mostly lets the melodies breathe, infusing them with his own personality the reworking of Stella by Starlight is quite intriguing and often giving the songs somber interpretations. One wishes that there was more variations in tempos and moods. Branford Marsalis' appearances on soprano and tenor are always an asset, sometimes livening up the selections although mostly playing a subsidiary role to his father.
