I was riding through the Manzano Mountains chasing the Milky Way north, or perhaps the ghost of Gram Parsons, on the backroads to Santa Fe when I remembered Eilen Jewell’s new album sitting on the seat next to me. Bathed in the blue light of the the dashboard, the hauntingly perfect opening track “Worried Mind” swirled through my car like the intoxicating haze of a well considered and unexpected alternative country song ... a song that merely hinted at times gone by, midnight highways, and off the beaten trail lonesome lost in the pines motels, with the first of the giant summer moths dancing ‘round the orange vacancy sign.

I know I should be stopping for the night, but like listening to some border radio station from back in the 50’s, I keep pushing on just a bit further ... for no other reason than to hear what comes next. That vacancy sign disappeared in my rearview mirror as the lively upbeat rockin’ Spanish influenced “Rio Grande” shimmered the car with delight, causing me to pick up the pace, leaving me half wasted, wishing I’d some fellow traveler to share these songs with. Eilen’s tunes ride low, filled with mystery and introspection, often to a dark bluesy backbeat, where she reels out stories that may or may not be true, though nevertheless, filled that empty seat like a true companion, one who knew the tall-tales, the history of every house I rolled by, the unidentified intersections, and a lazy roadhouse that served up the best burgers and double dipped fries ... leaving me feeling like a minor character in some western film-noir.

And that’s what’s best about this presentation, even out here on the backroads, with the headlights bouncing along in front of me ... I don’t feel at all alone.
