Eddie Harris - tenor saxophone, varitone. The Childrens Song and Is There a Place For Us were taped in October 1968 at Shelleys Manne-Hole in Hollywood, while the rest of the songs were recorded at the Village Gate in Manhattan on April 19, 1969. At this time, you couldnt do much better than catch Harris at such a club. He represented a touch of everything that was going on in 1969: A bit of rubbery funk blended with Coltrane-influenced jazz, blended with a pinch. His flair for drama shows in the pounding opening cut Movin' on Out where he builds the tension with an escalating series of murky cascades on his Echoplexed electric sax. Eddie Harris October 20, 1934 - November 5, 1996, was an American jazz tenor saxophonist. Although he was one of the most popular jazz musicians of his day and the first to receive a gold record, his inclusion in his repertoire of types of music other than jazz and his incorporation of comedy into his act led many jazz critics to consider him insufficiently committed to jazz. His experimentation with other types of music sometimes had questionable results, but many still regard him as one of the great jazz musicians. buy album. Eddie Harris. saxophone, tenor.
