Short intro

Don Cherry leads a quintet for an exciting set at Cafe Montmartre the home of many memorable recordings by American expatriates and touring musicians in 1966. Although there are plenty of wild moments, much of the music proves rather accessible to those not usually enamored with avant-garde jazz. Recorded for Danish radio broadcast, the 47-minute set begins with the explosive Cocktail Piece, introduced by Cherry as comprising of compositions of myself and Ornette Coleman. Cherry had a residency at the Café Montmartre in Copenhagen in 1966. When a decision was made to record the band, bassist Cameron Brown had to make way for Bo Stief because of a local labor laws stipulation that there had to be one Danish musician in the band. The other members were Karl Berger vibes, Aldo Romano drums, Barbieri tenor sax, with multi-instrumentalist Cherry sticking to the trumpet. The broadcast has been released in two volumes. The first Live at Café Montmartre 1966 Volume One, ESP Disk was released in 2007. This volume starts with Orfeu Negro, a blast of free air from Cherry settling into a mournful line from Barbieri. Live At Café Montmartre 1966 Volume Two Trumpet - Don Cherry Tenor Saxophone Gato Barbieri Trumpet, Composed By Don Cherry Vibraphone Karl two of the Don Cherry at Montmartre collection continues with more superb music, this time from March 1966. This unique performance actually represents the third Cherry appearance at Copenhagen's Café Montmartre. He had just recorded his first album for Blue Note Records, Complete Communion, in December 1965. Another added attraction is the mini-suite in tribute to Albert Ayler, the medley of Ghosts and Holy Spirit. Gato Barbieri is on fire throughout all three performances, Karl Berger constantly has a fast-paced conversation going on his vibes, and Bo Steif keeps a pulsating rhyt.
