Discouraged Ones stylized discøuraged ønes is the third full-length album by Katatonia. The album was released on April 27, 1998. This is the only Katatonia album with bassist Micke Oretoft. It is also their last release with Jonas Renkse on drums on future releases, he would focus on being the band's lead vocalist and contributing additional guitar work. According to Renkse, Discouraged Ones had sold roughly 20,000 copies as of 2001. All tracks are written by Renkse and Nyström unless noted otherwise. On Discouraged Ones, Katatonia remains as depressive as ever, while at the time moving even further away from its earlier sound than it did on the previous release, Brave Murder Day. Cleanly sung vocals at times reminiscent of the Cure's Robert Smith have replaced the agonizing growls of Dance of December Souls, while the songs themselves - averaging about four minutes apiece - are much more compact than their previous extended epics. Gothic Doom. Discouraged Ones is the first full length from Katatonia that shows their alternative direction in its fullest. Far removed from the metallic hymns of Brave Murder Day or the trudging lifeless dirges of Dance of December Souls, Discouraged Ones is one of the first steps into radio friendly territory, and yet whilst this lacks the raw atmospheric intensity of their two previous albums Discouraged Ones is a highly emotional album and one that I strongly urge all readers to listen.
