While the band's previous recordings - Sad & Dangerous, Dirty Three, and Horse Stories - have all, in some way, attempted to capture the trio's live show, where slow, winding patterns and riffs become a swirling churning blast of emotional cacophony for both musicians and listeners, Ocean Songs takes a very different tack to achieve an end that is similar, but more focused. This is the fourth album by Dirty Three, a meloncholic instrumental trio from Melbourne, Australia, whose sound can only be defined as unique and adored by college radio. Recorded by Steve Albini. On Ocean Songs, guitarist Mick Turner strums in grand and mournful sweeps while violinist Warren Ellis draws a rough, heart-pulling bow. On top, David Grubbs bumps lonely on his tom while keeping time with scratchy snare whispers and flickering tips and taps on the cymbals
