Short intro
Freedom of Choice is the third studio album by the American new wave band Devo. It was originally released in May 1980 on the label Warner Bros. The album contained their biggest hit to date, Whip It. Freedom of Choice was recorded between October 1979 and early 1980, at the Record Plant in Hollywood, California. The album saw the band moving in more of an overt synthpop direction, even though guitars still played a prominent role. Oh No It's Devo, Freedom Of Choice - Devo. With Freedom of Choice, Devo completed their transition into a full-fledged synth-pop group, producing arguably their most musically cohesive effort in the process. Synthesizers are now fully integrated into the band's sound, frequently dominating the arrangements and at least sharing equal time with the guitars. Everything is played with a cool, polished precision that mirrors the stylized uniformity of the band's visuals the dissonance is more subdued than in the past, and the uptight rhythms are no longer jarring, instead locking the band into a rigidly even keel. Album: Oh No It's Devo, Freedom Of Choice 1993. CASALE: Freedom of Choice is where the gods smiled on Devo. Everything came together for that record. Our experience at the Record Plant with Bob Margouleff was great, and he brought just the right kind of tone and energy to the fact that we were using mini-Moogs. I was playing synthesized bass rather than real bass and it all just started sounding right. It was an election year 1980 and the feeling in America was just lining up with Devo. There we were in silver suits, with red energy domes on an album cover of a record called Freedom of Choice where we looked like conformist mannequins. Devo Freedom Of Choice 1980. Devo Lean Into Their R&B Influences. Their past two LPs had been amalgamations of tracks written in and around their hometown from the early days as a band. Choice was crafted completely from scratch in their new base of Los Angeles. Lead singer Mark Mothersbaugh later said in The Stranger that Freedom of Choice, was the last album where there was really a lot of a concerted effort where everybody got together every day, and talked about stuff, and wrote things together. Recordings took place live in the studio, with all players contributing at the same time instead of in isolation. Most songs were done in one take. Produced by noted R&B producer and electronic music pioneer, Robert Margouleff, Freedom of Choice focused more on danceable rhythms and synthesized bass. Devo approached Marguleff, not only because of his experience with synthesizers as part of Tontos Exploding Head Band, but to give the album a sound similar to 60s R&B records. While Devo did not work with Marguleff again, their connection continued, as Mark Mothersbaugh housed the massive TONTO modular synthesizer in his Mutato Muzika studios from theRelated to Devo - Freedom Of Choice
