De La Soul came storming back after four years of recording inactivity - and practically a decade out of the hip-hop limelight - with a promise to release three full albums in a series they dubbed Art Official Intelligence. From the first volume, Mosaic Thump, it's clear that despite laudable ambitions, comeback albums should be focused and lean, not as flabby as this one. De La Soul is a massively influential hip hop group, hailing from Amityville, New York, United States. It's also the closest thing De La Soul have ever come to making a less-than-stunning LP. Maybe it's the contemporary production style that weakens songs like U Can Do and I C Ya'll. Maybe it's the far too many cameos by bigwigs like Busta Rhymes and Redman and not enough by dark-horse newcomers like Indeed who comes off nice on Set the Mood. De La Soul's latest doesn't blaze new trails as much as it blithely hopscotches through a chill out lounge of modest beats and a chop shop full of spare samples. Read full review. An earthy, beat-oriented album. It ain't '3 Feet High'-or even 'De La Soul Is Dead'- but it ain't half bad. Sep 2000, . De La Soul album bestography.
