EMI's early stereo sound is a wee bit dim but a whole lot of warm, deep, and detailed. Aram Khachaturian's Violin Concerto in D minor is a violin concerto in three movements composed in 1940. It was composed for David Oistrakh and was premiered on September 16, 1940 by Oistrakh. In 1940, Khachaturian was enjoying tremendous professional success and personal joy. He worked on the concerto in the tranquility of a wood composer's retreat west of Moscow he said of the composition that he worked without effort. EMI is to be chided here for their labeling because they don't make it clear that the excellently played recording of the Violin Concerto of Aram Khachaturian presented here is not recorded in stereo. There is a stereo remake of this pairing of the great Oistrakh with Khachaturian conducting the Philharmonia on a multi-disc set of great and notable recordings by King David Oistrakh, but unfortunately, this disc contains the earlier one made just before the stereo era. The playing by all is excellent, but the sound is too murky to be acceptable to the general public. Aside from its credentials, the recording is wonderful on its own terms. Dommage pour Oistrakh aussi bien que pour Khatchaturian.
