Pianist David Haney first came to the attention of the creative improvised music crowd through collaborations with trombonist Julian Priester. In addition to a variety of well-honed skills and fertile imagination, Haney's classical training enables him to expose the innards of composition while highlighting stylistic interconnectedness in a unique and resourceful manner. Two new releases continue in that vein but with somewhat of a twist. Album 2007 13 Songs. 3 - Variation On a Variation for Benga. 4 - Batwa Benga c. 1883 March 20, 1916 was a Mbuti Congo pygmy man, known for being featured in an exhibit at the Louisiana Purchase Exposition in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1904, and in a human zoo exhibit in 1906 at the Bronx Zoo. Benga had been purchased from African slave traders by the missionary Samuel Phillips Verner, a businessman searching for African people for the exhibition. He accompanied Verner to the United States. Later, at the Bronx Zoo, Benga was allowed to walk the grounds before and. David Haney and Julian Priester have been working together the whole of the 21st century and their music is definitely 21st Century. For this recording, they bring their particular shading of light and dark to a series 13 parts of improvisations inspired by the sojourns of Ota Benga of the Batwa tribe. Pensive and reflective, the nuanced tension of this music is often breathtaking and always starkly original.
