Produced mainly by Adam Schlesinger with some additional bonus tracks produced by Andrew Sandoval, the album was recorded to commemorate the band's 50th anniversary. It is the first Monkees studio album since Justus 1996, marking the longest gap between Monkees albums to date, and the first since the death of founding member Davy Jones. Designed as a celebration of the Monkees' 50th anniversary, Good Times certainly is a joyous revival of the cheerful jangle that characterized the group's big '60s hits, yet underneath the frivolity is an unspoken truth: this 2016 album is quite likely the band's last. After all, two decades passed between this and its 1996 predecessor, Justus, during which time Davy Jones died in another twenty years, the surviving Monkees would be in their nineties, an unlikely age to rock & roll. Good Times is as contemporary as it is a wander into the past. Over the album's 13 tracks 15 on the download, there is a seamless mixture of new and old, with material supplied by those who wrote some their biggest hits as well as songs by those who grew up on the band. The title track, for example, was based on a 1968 demo by Harry Nilsson , who wrote Cuddly Toy and Daddy's Song for them. Good Times is certainly the best Monkees LP since their '60s heyday, but it also stands firmly on its own as one hell of an album circa 2016.
