Cloud Nothings is an indie rock band from Cleveland, Ohio. Dylan Baldi started Cloud Nothings as a way to amuse himself between classes at Case Western Reserve University in 2009. The first batch of Cloud Nothings songs, including the blogosphere favorite Hey Cool Kid available on the 2010 compilation Turning On, was recorded on a computer in the basement of Baldi's home in Westlake, OH. On Life Without Sound, hes comparatively cryptic in some places: Saw darkened rings with a few bright highlights , he bellows on Darkened Rings. Elsewhere, he shows hope and desire, like on the jubilant, thrumming Modern Act , which hums along at a full, crystalline, Cure-like pulse, or the melodic catharsis of Enter Entirely , maybe the records strongest track, paired with the searing trademark Baldi proclamation: Were moving on, but I still feel it Youre just a light in me now. It includes the only glimpses of classic Cloud Nothings chaos, dosed heavily in the last two songs, Strange Year and Realize My Fate , with the latter clocking at almost six minutes. After the ragged angst of their last two albums, it's not surprising that Cloud Nothings opt for a lighter approach on Life Without Sound - if only to give Dylan Baldi's vocal cords a much-needed break. On their fifth album, Baldi and company sand off some of the rough edges that defined Attack on Memory and Here and Nowhere Else, and more often than not, it adds nuance to the tug of war between defiance and acceptance that drives their music. It sounds flippant to state that on 'Life Without Sound' Baldi has taken everything great about his former album and jettisoned it but that's just where we are. Let's not sugar coat this. Sure, this could well work for some bands, but in this instance a watered down Cloud Nothings equates to settling for a tepid mid 90s sound that would have resulted in an ass whipping had it been released in that decade yes, even from those sweet young Irish scrotes Ash. The song writing here is so by the numbers and unmemorable it's genuinely hard to accept
