Short intro
Fish Out of Water is the debut solo album from the English bassist, singer and songwriter Chris Squire, and one of only two he would release under his own name. The album was recorded during a period in which each band member had agreed to produce a solo album. Some of the musicians Squire hired for the project were former Yes drummer Bill Bruford, then Yes keyboardist Patrick Moraz, King Crimson saxophonist Mel Collins and Canterbury scene flautist Jimmy Hastings. Chris Squire's 'Fish Out of Water' borrows its tone from Yes' heyday, and that's not a surprise bearing in mind that Squire's bass and vocals were such a key part of Yes' sound. Despite the echoes of 'Fragile' and 'Relayer', what we have on our hands with this album is a lush, musically dense and creative piece of work that barely has a dull moment. However, this does not mean that this album isn't flawed it is. Pretty much my only problem with 'Fish Out of Water' is that some of the compositions are simply too long. I'm not saying they're too long in the sense that we need to go back to the 3-minute-pop-song format, I'm saying they're too long because the instrumental sections drone on. Yes-like in every possible aspect, Chris Squire's Fish out of Water is an album that's typical of his band's progressive formula: softened keyboard extensions à la Patrick Moraz, steady yet atmospheric percussion work from Bill Bruford, and a smattering of flute and saxophone that accompanies a small orchestra, which includes effective horn and harp work. Squire's guitar playing is standard, coming to life the most on Silently Falling and Lucky. It was here, between tours with Yes, that Fish Out Of Water slowly took shape. Fish Out Of Water is impressive. Coming out at a time when extended musicality was an integral part of the progressive rock landscape, its an album that not only holds its own next to any albums by Yes contemporaries, but also, whisper it, towers above the other solo releases of his bandmates. Still, that Fish Out of Water was conceived, recorded and released in such a short period of time, during the spring and summer of 1975, with an initial release date of November 7, 1975, reflects the kind of wellspring of creativity that was both taking place regularly at the time and being given significant major label attention. As for the qualities that define and unify Fish Out of Water Without a doubt, Squire's immediately recognizable, at times viscerally forceful but elsewhere profoundly lyrical playing, where he manages to marry the role of rhythmicharmonic anchor with both melodic counterpoint and, at times, staggeringly virtuosic soloing. Squire's guitar playing is standard, coming to life the most on Silently Falling and Lucky Seven, with the former boosted by a rather dazzling synthesizer solo from Moraz. Chris Squire,s musical skills just astounded me from the minute the needle hit the Seven is a gem and really has a rhythmic bounce and syncopation movement similar to a roller coaster record spells out the word fun in capital letters.
