Notes

"Children's Song No. 1 was written in 1971. The rest of the songs were composed gradually - one here and one there - until now, 12 years later, I'm pleased that they're complete and recorded."

Corea, who cites Béla Bartók as a major influence, had, throughout his career, written brief miniatures he called Childrens Songs. In some ways, Coreas lyrical but nevertheless rich in structure Childrens Songs were his versions of Bartóks Mikrokosmos series. A slower version of No. 1 first appeared on Coreas classic 1972 debut with Burton, Crystal Silence, while a group version of the same song appeared on the Latin-era Return to Forevers 1973 Polydor release, Light as a Feather, and two more appeared in group readings on Friends N. Review by Stephen Eddins: Chick Corea began writing his Children's Songs in 1971 and recorded the complete set of 20 in 1984. There's nothing inherent in the piano miniatures to indicate that they are especially for children.
