Pain Is Beauty is the third studio album from American singer-songwriter and eponymous band, Chelsea Wolfe released on September 3, 2013 through Sargent House. Thematically, Pain Is Beauty is said to be largely about idealistic love. Though Wolfe has also stated Its not a conceptual album. Theres a lot of different things its about: its about ancestry, its about nature, its about tormented love and sort of overcoming the odds. Theres a lot of different themes on this album. Indeed, the remarkable mix of presence and ghostly atmosphere in Wolfe's vocals unites the many sounds she explores, grounding more ethereal tracks like House of Metal's swooning chamber pop and leavening denser tracks such as Kings, one of the few times that the album comes close to being overwrought. From many other artists, this vast scope and variety would sound unfocused, and to be fair, Pain Is Beauty isn't quite as cohesive as Wolfe's earlier albums. Regardless, it's exciting to hear her try so many new things and do them so well. Chelsea Wolfe continues to make bigger and bigger waves in the underground music scene, amassing and uniting fans across a multitude of genres with her unique blend of diverse influences and distinctive yet varied vocal stylings, constantly difficult to pigeonhole. The term gothic is almost always used in conjunction with Wolfe and her music, though it tends to sell the artist and her often dark and dream-like works a bit short. Wolfe's songs of Pain emphasize massive builds with engulfing power in the vein of Swans. It's emotionally exhausting in equally mad and enjoyable ways, lasting nearly an hour across 12 twilight tracks of aggressive crescendos, poised reprieves, and suspended drama. And while there's something fascinating in how Wolfe attracts these crowds, she seems to exist alone in her own world on Pain Is Beauty, crystallizing and strengthening her musical language without compromising her original, principled vision. There's a propulsive quality to much of the beat-oriented Pain, but there remains a relative sense of privacy
