Short intro
The Montreal Tapes: with Don Cherry and Ed Blackwell is a live album by the American jazz bassist Charlie Haden with trumpeter Don Cherry and drummer Ed Blackwell recorded at the Montreal International Jazz Festival in 1989 and released on the Verve label. The same holds on Ed Blackwell's spotlight Happy House, the bass going double time and Cherry romping with high spirits, before the drummer delivers a model solo of polyrhythmic simplicity. Lonely Woman is the lone classic here, with applause greeting Haden's beautiful opening chord strums, Blackwell's cymbals, and Cherry's mournful muted pocket trumpet. When Charlie Haden tells the audience at Montreals tenth Festival: Im in heavenevery night, you cant help remembering that the trio on that particular day was also a fragment of a dream, actually three-quarters of the Old And New Dreams group of ex-Ornettists without Dewey Redmans tenor, or, rather, three-quarters of the alto. On JUly 2,1989,Charlie Haden,Don Cherry and Ed Blackwell met to produce this extraordinary ,twelve years have passed, and Don and Ed are night was a kind of tribute to Ornette Coleman six of the eight tracks were written by more than this, this is a tribute to all the history of jazz. The sphinx for example, looks so much like a Charlie Parker tune. Art deco is a very swinging melody by Don Cherry, some kind of insidious music that infects your mind and you'll always remember. Lonely woman is a haunting tune by Ornette not to.
