Short intro

The Symphonic Variations Variations symphoniques, M. 46, is a work for piano and orchestra written in 1885 by César Franck. It has been described as one of Franck's tightest and most finished works, a superb blending of piano and orchestra, and a flawless work and as near perfection as a human composer can hope to get in a work of this nature. It is a fine example of Franck's use of cyclic unity, with one theme growing into various others. Symphonic Spirituals - Paul Freeman, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. The other symphonies were Beethovens Third and Fifth, Brahms brilliant First, Dvoraks Ninth The New World , Schuberts Eighth Unfinished , and Tchaikovskys hyper-romantic Fourth and Fifth. While Franck never attempted to write a concerto, his Variations for piano and orchestra sounds very much like a piano concerto. François-Xavier Roth balances refinement with drama, reviving César Franck's neglected symphonic poems, writes Andrew Clements. César Franck's orchestral music seems deeply unfashionable nowadays even the D minor Symphony, his best known work, crops up in concert programmes far less often than it once did, while the symphonic poems, three of which are on this disc, are heard very rarely. Where the ride to damnation of Chasseur Maudit closely follows the outline of the German ballad on which it's based, both Les Eolides and Les Djinns are more evocation than narrative
