Catch Bull is impeccably produced. Its musical contents are like those of Teaser and the Firecat - simple, short-phrased melodies and spare and vibrant arrangements. There are, however, notable differences between Catch Bull and its predecessor. The instrumental repertoire has been widened somewhat: three cuts make minimal use of a synthesizer, and on four cuts Cat plays piano. Catch Bull at Four began with a statement of purpose, Sitting, in which Cat Stevens tried to talk himself into believing that he hadn't stalled, beginning to worry that he might be falling behind schedule or even going in circles. It may be that Stevens' recent experiences had contributed to his sense that he was running out of time. The title of this Cat Stevens album, Catch Bull at Four, comes from the 10 Zen Ox-herding images the fourth one. These images purport to show different stages on the path to enlightenment. And indeed, the songs all seem very pertinent to this path, very poignant and heart-opening. The fourth step is Catching The Bull, which illustrates a great struggle, the bull repeatedly will escape and discipline is required. CATCH BULL AT FOUR is chronologically Cat Stevens' 6th album, but it his 4th after his near-fatal bout with Tuberculosis during which he was hospitalized and recuperated for two years. He spent that time changing his attitude and also changing his music. Catch Bull at Four. Cat Stevens. Released 1972. Catch Bull at Four Tracklist.
