Encouraged by West Coast improvising saxophonist Larry Ochs, violinist Carla Kihlstedt and pianist Satoko Fujii teamed up for concert performances in San Francisco, CA, and Weis, Austria, excerpts of which are contained in this recording. Their spirit and verve for pure improvisation are captured well on these dates, which hopefully will not be their only collaboration documented. Fujii and Kihlstedt listen very closely to each other and respond to each other's gestures, shifting from lead to accompaniment effortlessly. Development happens organically and with such an extremely natural feeling that at times the music sounds composed. Part of the joy of listening to Minamo are the many different sounds and textures created both individually and together. While the music can get quite dense at times, there are many other instances of beauty. Satoko Fujii 藤井郷子, Fujii Satoko, born 9 October 1958 is a Japanese avant-garde jazz pianist, accordionist and composer. Fujii was born in Tokyo on 9 October 1958. She started playing the piano at age 4, receiving classical training until she was 20, when she became interested in improvisation and jazz. In her twenties, she received instruction in jazz from pianist Fumio Itabashi in Tokyo. Carla Kihlstedt born 1971 is an American composer, violinist, vocalist, and multi-instrumentalist, originally from Lancaster, Pennsylvania and currently working from a home studio on Cape Cod. She is a founding member of Tin Hat Trio 1997, renamed Tin Hat, Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, The Book of Knots, Causing a Tiger and Rabbit Rabbit.
