Short intro
Carl Nielsen's Wind Quintet, or as indicated by the original score, the Kvintet for Flöte, Obo, Klarinet, Horn og Fagot, Op. 43, was composed early in 1922 in Gothenburg, Sweden, where it was first performed privately at the home of Herman and Lisa Mannheimer on 30 April 1922. The first public performance was on 9 October 1922 in the smaller hall at the Odd Fellows Mansion in Copenhagen. It is considered a staple of the repertoire for wind quintet. Carl Nielsen Modern US. Nielsen- Quintet For Wind Instruments Op 43. Allegro ben moderato. The Wind Quintet, one of his most popular pieces, was composed in 1922 specifically for the Copenhagen Wind Quintet. Robert Simpson writes, Nielsen's fondness of wind instruments is closely related to his love of nature, his fascination for living, breathing things. He the members of the Copenhagen Wind Quintet. Composer Time PeriodComp. Nielsen composed the quintet during one of his frantic periods. He started shortly after finishing the Fifth Symphony CNW 29 in the beginning of 1922, and completed it in April while staying as a guest conductor in Gothenburg. It is said that Nielsen was inspired to compose the quintet when he heard Københavns Blæserkvintet Copenhagen Wind Quintet. He dedicated the work to the ensemble's five members. In the final movement, Nielsen employs his hymn tune, Min Jesus, lad mit Hjerte faa CNW 184, as theme for the set of variations. While not for everyone - those who think modernist music should be painful and pessimistic need not apply - this disc coupling Carl Nielsen's Flute Concerto and Clarinet Concerto along with his Wind Quintet will appeal to fans of the Danish composer's unique brand of optimistic modernism. If the wind quintet genre has its origins in the early 19th century, it was during the 20th that it came of age. Individually released by the Berlin Philharmonic Wind Quintet between 1992 and 2003, these four discs are here gathered into a full seasonal cycle: a catalogue of 20th-century music for wind quintet, performed by an ensemble that a reviewer in BBC Music Magazine has described as follows: Accustomed to working together with the worlds most gifted and demanding conductors, the five.
