Rival Dealer is the seventh extended play by British electronic music producer Burial. It was released digitally by Hyperdub on 11 December 2013, with a physical release following five days later. On 2 December 2013, a Cargo Records distribution email revealed that record label Hyperdub would release a three-track EP of Burial material on 16 December in vinyl and CD formats, designated with the catalogue number HDB080. His first release since Truant, Rough Sleeper the year prior, it was also revealed. In a rare public message to BBC Radio 6 Music, Burial himself clarified that he wanted the songs to be anti-bullying tunes that could maybe help someone to believe in themselves, to not be afraid, and to not give up, and to know that someone out there cares and is looking out for them. Burial followed Truant almost exactly a year to the day with another mid-December EP that contains lengthy suite-like pieces. Compared to what preceded it, this is easily the producer's most emotional and story-like output. While it carries many of the expected Burial elements - scuffed-up breakbeats, surface noise, near-silent passages, sampled vocalists made to sound angelic - Rival Dealer is a significant departure. I really did not dig this release on first listen, I have to admit mainly because it doesn't go anywhere near the prototypical Burial sound of old, and it just seems extremely self indulgent. After several listens tho, I do like how crazy this release is. It keeps me guessing throughout the tracks, which is something I love. I kinda wish he had split it into more tracks, but I guess themes run throughout, so it doesn't matter. Just kinda hard to remember what all the parts sound like. My summary would be weird release, very cool listen, but it just doesn't resonate with me as much as the first two albums. Maybe I'll feel differently in a few years looking back at it.

Nice EP, just not a big fan of 'Come Down To Us', I think the 'there is something out there' sample (also used in Loner at the beginning) is a bit misplaced. Hiders on the other hand is breathtaking, especially when the disco beat kicks in. And Rival Dealer surprised me, Burial's take on d'n'b? Sounds pretty awesome though!

At first blush I hated this release, but days after hearing it I found myself recalling some of the samples and melodies and getting them stuck in my head. I would give this EP a chance and be careful not dismiss it too quickly. Although it does have some issues being a little sloppy, unfocused and really cheesy in some areas, I found it be curiously affecting and even endearing. His motives for making this, whatever they were, might have been misguided but it nevertheless packs an undeniable emotional punch well on par with his other works.

Just didn't care for it. It felt too unfocused and lost a lot of the touch of his other works. Throw in social justice "I'm gay (trans in this case) and that's okay shut up you fucking republicans" messages and this is Rival Dealer.

Rival Dealer is definitely a step away from his other works, fast paced and almost feeling panicked in a cinematic sense. I like it, and it has the Burial formula to it, but a completely different sound.Hiders is absolutely addictive in its melody and emotional feeling, as if it had came out of a cheesy 80s flick and recycled itself to modern sounds, it brings me visions of the city.Come Down To Us has the same feeling as Hiders, and makes me think of a cinematic leitmotif, somehow making me think of Blade Runner in the track's absolute intimate nature.Absolutely loving this entire release, even as a long-time Burial fan.

Wow, look at all these Burial essays!For all those vocally opposed to this release, I think Mr. Bevan preemptively addresses that with his title track (“this is who I am”). Can we just discuss for a moment how much this EP delves into social identities and self-affirmation? This could be Burial's most intimate and far-reaching release yet; I was completely amazed when I heard the sound bytes. As other commenters have noted, this has potential to resonate with many loyal and new fans because it is such a refreshing, experimental, genuine expression of creative talent when juxtaposed against the “soulless” hegemony of today's mainstream.

It's dance music - electronic music - whatever you want to call it; it's not a lecture series. The people who talk about the music's 'thematics' (as if a few pithy, 5-second samples constitutes a 'social commentary' by dint of its inclusion...) are just ultimately misdirecting attention away from the music. And it's the music that matters. Personally I don't see how the corny drums and samples on the B-side connects to this so-called 'comment' about social identity or gender-politics or whatever - it just sounds bad. So for that reason this is the first Burial release I'm giving a miss. Just, just go away. lol

This is the only Burial release I'm not feeling at all. "Rival Dealer" has too many layers of sound and feels overall messed up, it feels forced. "Come Down To Us" is just all wrong, not for me at all. I don't understand where he's going with this release, don't get me wrong, I'm very much positive to change, but this is the wrong direction. 2/5 from me.
