Short intro
This set, recorded in November of 1965, features two rediscovered country blues legends, Bukka White and Skip James, both of whom, unlike Son House and some of the other old blues players rediscovered by the folk and blues revival, still had their singing and guitar-playing skills intact. Live at The Cafe Au Go Go is the debut album by the American band The Blues Project, recorded live during the Blues Bag four-day concert on the evenings of November 24-27, 1965 at the Cafe Au Go Go in New York City. The recording finished up in January, 1966 at the same venue, by which time Tommy Flanders had left the band. They scaled down their usual lengthy arrangements for the album due to time constraints and record label wariness. Goin' Down Louisiana Muddy Waters 4:04. Bukka White & Skip James. Blues 2014. He exerts a humorous personality and plays a variety of songs. It's not to die for, but it's a good solid set. The Skip James set is much shorter only 6 tunes but is very typical of his later style. He doesn't play piano here. I like James a lot, and it was fun to hear something sort of new after all these years, though the songs are all ones he's recorded before, I believe. More likely is that these live recordings of James and Bukka White are sourced from the August 1966 performances that were released, in part, by Verve Folkways as the 1967 Living Legends LP which also included songs by Son House and Big Joe Williams, which dates them as somewhere in between the making of James first and second Vanguard Records albums.
