The Genius of Bud Powell, originally titled Bud Powell's Moods, is a studio album by jazz pianist Bud Powell, released in 1956 by Mercury, Clef, featuring two sessions that Powell recorded in 1950 and 1951. The album was re-released on CD by Verve in 1992, with two additional takes of Tea for Two. The sessions also appear on The Complete Bud Powell on Verve 1994 box set. The two sessions mark Powell's fourth recording date as leader, following on from the February 1950 session for Jazz Giant. The Genius Of Bud Powell - Bud Powell. The Amazing Bud Powell Vol. 3, all released on Blue Note. The album details two recording sessions. In the first, recorded on August 9 1949, Powell performed in quintet with Fats Navarro, Sonny Rollins, Tommy Potter and Roy Haynes, and in trio with Potter and Haynes. In the second, on May 1 1951, Powell performed in trio with Curley Russell, Max Roach, and solo. The album is critically prized among Powells releases. Among the more discussed of the albums tracks is the pianists composition Un Poco Loco A Little Crazy , which has been singled out by critics and cultural historians for. In 1951, Bud Powell was still at the height of his considerable powers. Included here are two sessions from that year: a trio with Ray Brown and Buddy Rich three takes of Tea for Two and a super-fast Hallelujah and eight solo piano tunes from a different date. On Tea for Two, Rich's drumming brings out the charming show-off in Powell, and on Hallelujah, Powell plays with a hysterical clarity. Oblivion and Hallucinations are the most masterful of the eight solo cuts. The Amazing Bud Powell, Vol. The Best of Bud Powell On Verve. Jazz Giant. The Amazing Bud Powell. 60 million songs.
