You Can't Have Your Cake and Eat It Too - Masters at Work. You can't have your cake and eat it too is a popular English idiomatic proverb or figure of speech. The proverb literally means you cannot simultaneously retain your cake and eat it. Once the cake is eaten, it is gone. It can be used to say that one cannot have two incompatible things, or that one should not try to have more than is reasonable. The proverb's meaning is similar to the phrases you can't have it both ways and you can't have the best of both worlds. Main page. You Can't Have Your Cake And Eat It Too. One of my all-time favorite songs, it is funny, joyful, up-beat and so powerful that it's become a guilty pleasure. Released in August 1982, it didn't make the charts but after listening to it, you wonder why. The keyboardist and piano man make this one work, as Taylor and her backround singers keep reminding us we can't have it both ways when it comes to love.
"Guilty" pleasure? Then I committed murder in the first!
