"Reckless", the fourth album from Canadian rocker Bryan Adams, utilizes the immediacy and momentum of his third collection "Cuts Like A Knife" whilst achieving more palpable intensity and esteem beyond his homeland. Patently seeking out mainstream recognition, Adams opted to alter the jagged rawness of his previous work, with each composition on this assemblage reconstructed into melodic AOR by Bob Clearmountain's slick production. Although the album is confidently and indubitably his most successful and commercial effort, securing his imperial phase as an MTV and radio mainstay and effectively denoting it as a disjointed collation of six billboard chart hits appended with filler, Adams defies such creative exigency to compose a fluid, cogent convocation fully deserving of its prevailing acclaim. Owing to tracks such as "Heaven" and "Run to You" appealing to the masses rather than the classic rock subdivision, "Reckless" is now perhaps unfairly maligned as refined corporate rock, and mainly due to its limited sonic palette and lyrical immaturity, such accusations are accurate, but Adams' most accomplished record is a satisfying listen regardless of its minor flaws. As evidenced by "Summer of '69" and "Ain't Gonna Cry", "Reckless" is uniformly comparable to heartland rock paradigms "Damn the Torpedoes" and "Born in the USA" and therefore should be reappraised as one of the most significant classic rock music artefacts of the 1980s, albeit without the politicising of his roots rock contemporaries.
