Short intro

The River is the fifth studio album by Bruce Springsteen. It was released on October 17, 1980, by Columbia Records. Springsteen's only double album, The River was produced by Jon Landau, Springsteen, and bandmate Steven Van Zandt. The album was Springsteen's first to go 1 on the Billboard 200 and spent four weeks at the top of chart. The River was nominated for Best Rock Vocal Performance at the 1982 Grammy Awards. With 1980's The River, Springsteen sought to expand on those themes while also offering more of the tough, bar-band rock that was his trademark and often conspicuous in its absence on Darkness, and by the time it was released it had swelled into Springsteen's first two-LP set. A blowout double-album split evenly between huge house-party numbers and a wealth of live staples and darker, real-world tales in the vein of the title track, The River represented a Springsteen out to explore the emerging dualities of his music. Less than four months after the Darkness tour ended on New Years Day 1979, Springsteen and the E Street Band took up residency at the Power Station in New York. Born to Run was lush, and Darkness suffered from a flat production job that was common in the mid-to-late 70s. Springsteen wanted a different approach this time around. I wanted to cut some music that felt very explosive, he said in Peter Ames Carlins Bruce. I wanted to combine the fun aspect of what the band did along with the story I was telling. The River is the fifth studio album a double album by Bruce Springsteen, released on October 17, 1980. Rolling Stone ranked it at 253 on their list of the greatest albums of all time. On December 4, 2015, a box set entitled The Ties That Bind: The River Collection was released to celebrate the 35th anniversary of The River. There was also a tour to promote the box set. Springsteen performed The River in its entirety during most of the shows. Bruce Springsteen to Release Long Awaited 'River' Box Set This December. Unlike Bruces previous high points - 1973s Greetings From Asbury Park, N. striving nu-Dylan makes hyper-wordy debut, 1975s Born to Run underperforming contender makes last-chance power drive, and 1978s Darkness on the Edge of Town pissed-off victim of showbiz malfeasance makes angriest LP yet - The River. It might also be the wealth of material that causes The River to be overlooked. Clocking in at 83 minutes and spread over 20 tracks, its a lot to take - even from an emerging rock n roll icon at the peak of his songwriting powers

Having just seen Bruce and the band touring the anniversary of this album, I am taken right back to the show with each and every track...worth every hard-earned dollar I just paid for it.

Seminal 1980 double album from the USA rocker, the song-writing quality is quite good although as with most double albums there are a few fillers in between, but the texts on this album are some of Mr. Springsteen's more understated. The recording quality is ok but the mastering is frankly quite bad, early European pressings were OK, better than the USA pressings but literally all CD pressings sound awful, initial CD transfer from 1982 was used on all releases until 2005 when a Japanese pressing appeared that was slightly better, however that was allegedly not from a master but from a tape copy.

Nice album for people into adult oriented rock but in a bad need of remastering.
