Alternative 2012. electronic-post-hardcore whatever genre band Breathe Carolinas newest album, Hell Is What You Make It, doesnt exactly separate the band in anyway from the masses, but there is no denying it is catchy. Mashing together auto-tuned singing, plenty of vocal effects, screams, keyboards galore, along with some standard instrumentation, Breathe Carolina provides an interesting listen. The albums singles, Wooly and Blackout, as well as track four, Edge of Heaven truly showcase the bands style. Its not the most original album ever released, but there is no denying that Breathe Carolina has something good going for them. Breathe Carolina's third album Hell Is What You Make It finds the duo of Kyle Even and David Schmitt refining their amalgamation of sounds into something both slicker and more powerful than past efforts. On their first two albums, they built an impressively jury-rigged sound made up of electronic, dancefloor-friendly beats, crunching guitars, squiggly synths, and Auto-Tuned angst. Breathe Carolina are an interesting observation on the direction of American music. America had a huge backlash against Disco in the 70’s which lasted for decades and likely caused a lot of great music to be ignored if it even vaguely hinted at the slightest connection to it. Now, it seems that electronic dance music, which has been mainstream everywhere else in the world, has finally broken into mainstream America, but even more impressive, has been adopted by the rock oriented community that originally shunned it.

What’s that got to do with anything about Breathe Carolina?

Well, if you’ve heard “Blackout” then you’ll have heard the brilliant merging of electronic disco and hardcore industrial rock. The rest of the album takes the juxtaposition even further and there are some wild swings between electro and “cookie monster” rock. Amazingly, it works. Think of Nine Inch Nails or Linkin Park but with the polar opposites of the music styles taken even more to the extreme.
