American Primitivism from a Brazilian maestro. John Fahey allegedly called this his favorite record in the Takoma catalogue. You'll understand why when you give it a listen. There's something special about it. Each pluck is permeated with a certain energy, a momentum, and a rich cultural history. He plays with the spontaneity of a jazz player, the intricacy of a classical player, and the pure joy of a bossa nova giant. This record is full of fiery passion, and a lot of emotion comes through. Its complexity can be seen in its contradictions. It's ecstatic, yet forlorn. Wise, yet curious. It's purely human.

"Vira Mundo Penba" is as beautiful an opener as you'll hear anywhere. It arrested me the first time I heard it. But you'll discover plenty more depth as the tunes unfurl. "Let Go", "Macumba", "Black Mommy", "Lonely Gaucho", "Xengo Xererengo", "Ocean Waves".... There are so many rich moments. He went into the studio to channel the wordless beauty of the ocean. I think he succeeded. There's a lot of power in these tracks. Soak it in.
