The Scottish saxophonist Bobby Wellins and English pianist-composer Kate Williams sound made for each other in this collection of standard songs and originals, recorded in rehearsal and in concert at Halifax's Dean Clough arts centre last year. It is, of course, an intimate exploration of a familiar rulebook between a slow-burn saxist with leanings toward the 1950s cool school, and a quietly elegant Bill Evans-inflected pianist. But it's also about the best qualities of jazz, irrespective of style or fashion about sharing, spontaneity, communication and surprise. Robert Coull Wellins 24 January 1936 27 October 2016 was a Scottish tenor saxophonist who collaborated with Stan Tracey on the album Jazz Suite Inspired by Dylan Thomas's Under Milk Wood 1965. Robert Coull Wellins was born into a showbiz family living in the Gorbals, Glasgow he later lived in Carnwadric and attended Shawlands Academy. Wellins studied alto saxophone and harmony with his father Max, and also played piano and clarinet when young. He joined the RAF as a musician playing tenor sax. Tenor saxophonist Bobby Wellins has been one of the UK's major jazz instrumentalists for over 50 years he first recorded in 1956, aged 20. He is still a vital member of the UK music community: an achievement recognized by the award of Musician Of The Year in the 2012 Parliamentary Jazz Awards. The opening bars of Smoke And Mirrors, one of three jointly composed tunes on the album, set the standard: languid, relaxed interplay between tenor saxophone and piano that has the effortless ease that can only come from players in total command of their craft.
