Magician's Hat is an instrumental progressive rock album by Swedish musician Bo Hansson. It is his second solo album, following the successful Music Inspired by Lord of the Rings, and was originally released in Sweden by Silence Records in 1972, with the title Ur trollkarlens hatt. Listen out for songs like ' Divided reality', ' Awakening' and the epic slow jam of ' The Sun parallel or 90 degrees'. Bo Hansson's second album, despite the title, moves away from the mystic, fantastic realms explored on his Lord of the Rings album in favour of moving into fusion territory, as well as giving more of a platform for his guitar playing. It's all quite competently done, but at the same time I feel that it ends up feeling a bit emotionless and generic, the loss of the Lord of the Rings concept leading to a situation where Hansson shows off his technical abilities without a strong concept or theme to structure them around. I bought Magician's Hat in 1972 and wore it out, mostly late nite while crashing. It's beautiful music, of it's time but very innovative for it's time. As for the rest of the album, you get plenty of Bo Hansson's trademark fairy tale-influenced prog rock, although this one tends to be a little more jazzier than his other efforts, especially because there tends to be more horns than his others. There's a couple of songs that seem like pointless, directionless noodling that seems to go nowhere, and that's why I took a star off this album. Excursion With Complications - Bo Hansson.
