Black Sabbath is the debut studio album by the English rock band Black Sabbath. Released on 13 February 1970 in the United Kingdom and on 1 June 1970 in the United States, the album reached number eight on the UK Albums Charts and number 23 on the Billboard charts. Black Sabbath is widely considered the first heavy metal album. Additionally, the opening track of the album, Black Sabbath, has been referred to as the first doom metal song. Nightmare is the sixth track of of Black Sabbath's thirteenth album The Eternal Idol. Black Sabbath were an English heavy metal band formed in Birmingham in 1968 by guitarist Tony Iommi, drummer Bill Ward, bassist Geezer Butler and vocalist Ozzy Osbourne. They are often cited as pioneers of heavy metal music. The band helped define the genre with releases such as Black Sabbath 1970, Paranoid 1970, and Master of Reality 1971. The band had multiple line-up changes following Osbourne's departure in 1979, with Iommi being the only constant member throughout its history. Nightmare 2001 Remaster. Black Sabbath. The Eternal Idol was Black Sabbath's thirteenth studio album, and the first of many to feature Sabbath vocalist Tony Martin. Tony Iommi wrote Nightmare when he was asked to write the soundtrack for Nightmare on Elm Street. Tony wanted to be involved with the film, but his management held out for more money and the filmmakers backed off. Iommi said of Tony Martin's lyrics on The Eternal Idol: He assumed, oh, Black Sabbath, it's all about the Devil, so his lyrics were full of the Devil and Satan. It was too much in your face. Doing it a third time seemed virtually impossible. Luckily for them, Deep Purple were on hiatus at this point, and Ian Gillan was looking for a gig. He was clearly the best man for the job, and in 1983 they entered the studio to cut Born Again. This extremely brief period of Black Sabbath has been mocked for years.
