A cleaned up production with less emphatic sweeping melodies, Billy Joel's propensity for registering his ballads with a slickness is restrained slightly here, with songs such as "Only the Good Die Young" being wittingly and immediately infectious and swaggering rather than overblown, sweet and mellow. Calculatedly aimed at the mainstream pop demographic, as evidenced by the conspicuous streamlining of his usually lavish arrangements, the glossy, radio-friendly sound and firmly distinct singular narrative conveyed throughout renders the entire record a loosely connected illustrative portrait of the inner workings of downtown New York City life, although "Just the Way You Are" is by far the least raw and anecdotal in tone. Yes, the misogyny on "She's Always A Woman" is jarring when one considers the conviction with which it is expressed, but it is a product of its time and should not be consigned to the past and erased from memory because of its political incorrectness. Is the misogyny latent by design or simply viewed from the skewed perspective of a non-biographical character? Only Billy Joel can explain why the song consists of a series of sardonic compliments directed at a woman, and that is the nature of artist and their work; art is inevitably interpreted in different ways as decades pass and opinions change. I have no doubt when it premiered on the radio back in 1977 that the song's subject was not perceived as being anything other than ambiguous in its contempt for a woman's physical and personality traits. After all, the veiled hatred of the woman in question arises from a detached point of view, also denoted in "Movin' Out (Anthony's Song)", the songs are all mere vignettes written with creative license. It is a song with lasting ambivalent power, but it is not the musical high point of the album, that honour most definitely goes to the sublime "Vienna", so exquisite that it aids the momentum on the remaining tracks.

"The Stranger" and its shortcomings mean that the album is not as revered as it was in previous years, but it is Billy Joel's most thematic and listenable, perhaps even his first and last creatively balanced attempt at achieving both critical and commercial success on a monumental scale. Billy Joel proceeded to make shameless bids for equality in terms of his contemporaries and their considerable sales figures, and this point of his career marked the beginning of that urge to appeal to the masses, however, this album, although commercially successful, thankfully does not suffer a significant reduction in quality that often occurs with a desire for mainstream recognition. In spite of its pop leanings, "The Stranger" is a cool and cocky record with elements of theatricality and bravado, and although there are Broadway-esque show-stoppers, the oblique modulation discerned on the lower tempo tracks invigorates the decidedly dramatic and less complex musical passages, and owing to the album essentially being comprised of mean-spirited inner city fables minus the usual turgid pomposity, there is much to enjoy here.

*It may not be perfect, but at least you can crank up the sound with the MFSL version's 2-channel stereo mix. I would not recommend the ear-bleeder that is the original SACD, especially the highly compressed 5.1 mix.
????????????????????????
????????????????????????
IMHO, this isn't MFSL's best work. The Columbia SACD release sounds far better to my ears. The MoFi's version seems to be relatively flat and uninspired, at least in the 2ch mix (I don't have a 5.1 setup). I can't put my finger on what it is, but this version borderlines on being fatiguing to listen to.
