Bill Monroe actually started his recording career some years before, but while his style evolved gradually, historians regard the music that he recorded with Columbia in 1945 as marking the beginnings of bluegrass music as a genre in its own right. This set contains all 40 songs that Bill Monroe recorded for Columbia, though controversially 16 of them are alternative versions that were unreleased prior to 1992. On the surface, The Essential Bill Monroe: 1945-1949 seems like the perfect compilation, containing 40 tracks of Monroe and the Blue Grass Boys' Columbia recordings. However, the set wasn't executed with care - no less than 16 of these songs are represented with alternate takes, not the original versions. By and by his brothers and sisters moved away, leaving Monroe to bounce between uncles and aunts until finally settling in with his disabled uncle Pendleton Vandiver, whom he often accompanied when Vandiver played the fiddle at dances. On that album, Monroe recorded a number of traditional fiddle tunes he had often heard performed by Vandiver.
